The USS Benfold has long been a source of pride for the U.S.Navy,and its former captain,Michael Abrashoff,authored the classic management book*This Is Your Ship*,which garnered widespread attention and study within the ChineseNavy.
The Benfold is equipped with three generators in three separate compartments,theoretically capable of providing backup for each other.However,if a malfunction occurs in a critical part of the electrical grid,or if extensive circuit isolation is necessary to prevent short circuits or fires,even if the generators themselves are intact,the entire ship couldlose power.

Both ships share another commonality:advanced age.The USS Benfold,commissioned in 1996,is now30 years old;theUSS Higgins,commissioned in 1999,has served for 27years.
The former was already in the latter part of its service life,but the U.S.Navy did not retire it as originally planned.Instead,in 2023,it decided to extend its service life by another 5 years,until fiscal year 2036.At that tim
e,the destroyer will have served for 40years.
